One rabbi has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for hiring two hitmen to murder his wife so that he could continue his sexual misconduct. Religious groups are rocked with scandal. Too many ministers, priests, and rabbis, who are expected to be virtuous and holy, are perpetrators of all kinds of sexual abuse. Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust affirms the pervasiveness of sexual abuse against teenaged girls and women carried out by religious leaders.

Authored by Charlotte Rolnick Schwab, Ph.D., this important work attests the many betrayals and even two murders related to the sexual misconduct of rabbis.

Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trustshows the result of people's excessive exaltation of religious leaders. Schwab writes about her own frightening and shocking experience as the wife of a rabbi (her second marriage) who admitted in a court of law to sexual misconduct. With disgust, she reveals her rabbi/husband's violence toward her and his threat to kill her if she exposed his nefarious double life. This powerful book assays the alarming extent of sexual abuse of teen aged girls and women by clergy (sexual abuse of boys is a small percentage of the problem in all religions, including Catholicism, but the publicity about it has served to expose sexual abuse of teen aged girls and women as the far bigger problem), and includes suggestions to stop this abuse and to bring about healing and change. Sex, Lies, and Rabbis: Breaking a Sacred Trust presents policies synagogues and denominations must adopt to combat this issue. The book defines clergy sexual abuse, gives information about what leads rabbis and other clergy to become sexual predators and offers suggestions for prevention.

Schwab, who is a victim/survivor of domestic abuse from her first marriage (also discussed in the book, which also affirms the pervasiveness of abuse of women in Jewish homes, being combated by KOLOT organizations within the Jewish Family Services) imparts a healing program which, while utilizing Judaic sources and geared toward victims/survivors of rabbis' sexual abuse, and toward understanding and stopping abuse by rabbis of all denominations, can be easily adapted for healing from any kind of abuse, including abuse by clergy of other religions, and for victims/survivors of wife batterers. This book proves validating and helpful for women who have suffered any kind of abuse.
